Fast Self-Similar Teletraffic Generation Based on FGN and Inverse DWT∗

چکیده
It is generally accepted that self-similar (or fractal) processes may provide better models of teletraffic in modern computer networks than Poisson processes. Thus, an important requirement for conducting simulation studies of telecommunication networks is the ability to generate long synthetic stochastic selfsimilar sequences. A new generator of pseudo-random self-similar sequences, based on the fractional Gaussian noise (FGN) and wavelet transform is proposed and analysed in this paper. Specifically, this generator uses Daubechies wavelets. The motivation behind this selection of wavelets is that Daubechies wavelets lead to more accurate results, by matching the self-similar structure of long range dependent processes. The statistical accuracy and time required to produce sequences of a given (long) length are experimentally studied. This generator shows a high level of accuracy of the output data (in the sense of the Hurst parameter) and is fast. Its theoretical algorithmic complexity is O(n).

Self-Similarity and Long-Range Dependence in Teletraffic
This paper revisits three important concepts in fractal type network traffic, namely, self-similarity (SS), long-range dependence (LRD), and local self-similarity (LSS). Based on those concepts, we address the reason why the local properties of fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) are contained in the global properties of fGn and vice versa, which may be a limitation of fGn in data traffic modeling....

متن کاملGenerating LRD Traffic Traces Using Bootstrapping
Long-range dependence (LRD) or second-order self-similarity has been found to be an ubiquitous feature of internet traffic. In addition, several traffic data sets have been shown to possess multifractal behavior. In this paper, we present an algorithm to generate traffic traces that match the LRD and multifractal properties of the parent trace. Our algorithm is based on the decorrelating proper...

We present a time–parallel technique for the fast generation of self–similar traffic which is suitable for performance studies of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The technique is based on the well known result according to which the aggregation of a large number of heavy–tailed ON/OFF– type renewal/reward processes asymptotically approximates a Fractional Gaussian Noise (FGN) process...
